The first song man heard was his own heartbeat.  We all still carry that same song within us.

It is our center.  It is who we are.  This song is what links all mankind.

Music is the one thing that can bring your spirits up when you are down, and make you smile when you are sad. Music expresses feelings in everyone, no matter what age. Have you ever met anyone who didn't like some sort of music?  I haven't.

Imagine how beautiful the world would be if all of the people were to weave the sweet threads of harmony to make a blanket of peace, as a musician weaves the uniting threads of melody to capture a soul.

Approach your instrument with respect.

Play your music from the heart, in the moment ......

Your music will have an influence, you can help make things better.

A delicate hint can, at times, be more grand than the most powerful stroke.

If you enjoy the sound of music, and want to continue to do so; and if you want to be able to understand what others say to you, then you must protect your hearing.  If you subject your ears to excessive volume, you will lose important parts of your hearing range.  It is as simple as that.

"
Music is the core of existence. It is the language of the heart; the harmony of mind and

soul.  Every person has the potential to be an instrument of peace.  My goals, and the

goals of my fellow musicians, are to fully realize that potential and to practice at

perfecting that "instrument" so that one day, mankind may unite to blend a symphony

of peace and harmony that would make the angels weep softly in approval."

The man that hath no music in himself,
Nor is moved with concord of sweet sounds,
Is fit for treasons, stratagems and spoils;
The motions of his spirit are dull as night
And his affections dark as Erebus:
Let no such man be trusted. Mark the music.

                                                          "Peace Canon"

                                                                         by Pamela Chappell

One person at a time, one person at a time,

We can build a world of peace one person at a time.

I can’t change the whole world wide,

But I can change the world inside,

And so we start, from heart to heart, one person at a time.

We must be the change we want to see in the world.*

We must be the change we want to see.

Wherever you go, whatever you seek,

Whatever you do each day of the week,

Simple as rain, perfect and plain,

                                         Let your life speak.

Let your life speak.  Let your life speak.**

Let the love come pouring out of you,

                                         Every day of the week.

Let your voice ring.  Let your heart sing.

                                         It’s simple.  It’s perfect.  It’s peace.

                                         It’s simple.  It’s perfect.  It’s peace.

One day, all people will know what I know, that music is the audible portion of all creation.  The wind, the waves, the leaves, all have a rhythm and rhyme.  All creation cries out to it's creator.  But alas, man has not learned that there is no beauty or reason in the music of war.

I used to practice the guitar on a large granite stone by the brook in my backyard in Massachusetts.  The sound of the wind in the trees and the cascading water would accompany me during numerous elongated solos.  I would let these rhythms dictate the tempo and the intensity of my playing.  The sights and sounds were amazing.  It was a great teacher, and the music never, ever sounded the same twice.

Then winter would come, and practicing by the brook wasn't feasible, so I would sit on the lip of the tub in our bathroom and practice there.  Though the acoustics were fantastic, there was no wind or running water, just tile and porcelain, but if I closed my eyes and opened my ears, I could hear the brook and the wind.  It sounded great, and it never, ever sounded the same twice.

Musical peace is a place, but not a physical one.

"Walk in Peace"

Scattered in my room lie the things which make up my soul: books, poetry, drawings, my guitar, and art supplies.  Sitting quietly in my corner are shoes which are created from simplicity in art.  " Depth" echoes my soul.  "Walk in peace" whisper my shoes...."walk in peace."

"Peace Through Doors"

Peace, so we have been taught, is a beautiful but distant thing.  It is often overlooked, and too seldom set as a goal anymore.  Peace is seen as but a myth in much of today’s society, but it still burns strongly in many hearts.

I am in the 11th grade, and I have come to find out that people can be so cruel.  Everywhere from the hallway fights to the graffiti on the bathroom walls, there is so much hate poisoning our school.  Hate for any reason people can find, or for no reason at all.

About a week ago, I was in the school bathroom when I looked up at the door and saw the most horrible things written on it.  So I pulled out my big markers, and turned them into art.  Next to the art, I drew a big peace sign, and wrote "What could be better than to find unity and peace, teach peace, and find peace within yourself ?"  About 3 days later, I went back into the bathroom, and on the door, all around my "art," there were little signatures with tiny little peace signs.

All I have to say is don’t lose hope in finding peace.  There are still so many people working toward peace and simply finding it within themselves.  How can the world come to peace, unless individuals can come to peace within themselves ?”

Find peace within yourself, and work from there.  And, I believe that in time, the world will find peace.

If we can do anything, why not peace
If we can climb the highest peak
If we can raise the worlds heat
and still find the words to speak, why not peace

If we are strong or if we are weak
If freedom's cause cannot be beat
If we can be what we want to be, why not peace

If the biggest business in the world is war and killing

and nothing sells like weapons and rebuilding, why not peace
If we can do anything ......

Music is well said to be the speech of angels; in fact, nothing else among the utterances allowed to man is felt to be so Divine. It brings us near to the Infinite; we look for moments across the cloudy elements into the eternal light, when song leads and inspires us. Serious nations, all nations that can listen to the mandate of nature, have prized song and music as a vehicle for worship, for prophecy, and for whatsoever in them was Divine.

Drums and Hearts Beating
Day 12 of Ground Zero, we gather more often, and we become prayer people overnight, sending up messages for healing and understanding.  To me, our music connection is the bridge to the heavens!  We raise our heads up high and beat our drums.  We cast our mariachis, our tambourines, our bells and whistles.  A steady beat.    When gathered in numbers, and yes, we must gather now and understand the deep meanings of life, the beat is powerful and moving.  We clap our hands and shout out.  The heavens come closer and we know that a strong universal power is, and always will be, in play.

Music not only springs from every breath that we take and every beat of our hearts, but it also lies within every part of creation.  It is the spirit that is within us and without us.  It was there at the start of creation and it will live on forever.  Music is the foundation from which springs all art, and therefore within all art lies the potential for inspiring peace.

Every day can be a beautiful day.
Think of all of the wonderful things you have to be thankful for...
the sunshine, laughter, close friends, family, music, health and wonderful dreams.
The storm is never half as bad as it seems.
Don't let the rain ruin your day.
When the clouds move in, just be glad that the good times are on the way.

On Nov. 18, 1995, Itzhak Perlman, the violinist, came on stage to give a concert at Avery Fisher Hall at Lincoln Center in New York City. If you have ever been to a Perlman concert, you know that getting on stage is no small achievement for him. He was stricken with polio as a child, and so he has braces on both legs and walks with the aid of two crutches.

To see him walk across the stage one step at a time, painfully and slowly, is a sight. He walks painfully, yet majestically, until he reaches his chair. Then he sits down, slowly, puts his crutches on the floor, undoes the clasps on his legs, tucks one foot back and extends the other foot forward. Then he bends down and picks up the violin, puts it under his chin, nods to the conductor and proceeds to play.

By now, the audience is used to this ritual. They sit quietly while he makes his way across the stage to his chair. They remain reverently silent while he undoes the clasps on his legs. They wait until he is ready to play.

But this time, something went wrong. Just as he finished the first few bars, one of the strings on his violin broke. You could hear it snap - it went off like gunfire across the room. There was no mistaking what that sound meant. There was no mistaking what he had to do.

People who were there that night thought to themselves: "We figured that he would have to get up, put on the clasps again, pick up the crutches and limp his way off stage - to either find another violin or else find another string for this one."

But he didn't. Instead, he waited a moment, closed his eyes and then signaled the conductor to begin again. The orchestra began, and he played from where he had left off. And he played with such passion and such power and such purity as they had never heard before. Of course, anyone knows that it is impossible to play a symphonic work with just three strings. I know that, and you know that, but that night Itzhak Perlman refused to know that. You could see him modulating, changing, recomposing the piece in his head. At one point, it sounded like he was de-tuning the strings to get new sounds from them that they had never made before.

When he finished, there was an awesome silence in the room. And then people rose and cheered. There was an extraordinary outburst of applause from every corner of the auditorium. We were all on our feet, screaming and cheering, doing everything we could to show how much we appreciated what he had done.

He smiled, wiped the sweat from this brow, raised his bow to quiet us, and then he said, not boastfully, but in a quiet, pensive, reverent tone, "You know, sometimes it is the artist's task to find out how much music you can still make with what you have left."
